OS Help Files

Most OSs come with some sort of electronic help files and utilities. These files and utilities vary substantially in nature, scope, and usefulness. The most sophisticated built-in help systems include search engines, indexes, and other helpful features. The most primitive consist of little more than a collection of ASCII files.

The following are examples of built-in help files:

  • README files— Many OSs place one or more files in some prominent location on the computer's hard disk with the intent that you read them. These files often bear names like README or README.TXT.
