Boot loaders are what make multi-OS configurations convenient, or even possible. Without multi-OS boot loaders, we would have to use FDISK to change the bootable partition and then reboot. The design of the PC boot process provides several possible locations for "hooks" into the process, where a boot loader can take over and redirect the boot process to suit your desires.
