Mention Linux today in any computer circle and you'll get a reaction. That reaction might be deep scorn or glowing praise, but Linux is the hot topic in the computer world at the turn of the millennium. Why? The reasons for Linux's current status are complex, but they include

  • Politics— Linux is an open source OS developed largely using the GNU General Public License (GPL), which ensures the continued free availability of the source code. This fact elates some people and antagonizes others, for reasons unrelated to the OS's technical merits.
