Your OS, Please…

When you call a technical support line for an Internet service provider (ISP) or a manufacturer of a hardware component or another computer-related product, one of the first questions you'll be asked is what OS you use. Many firms don't ask the question in such an open-ended way, though. "Do you use Windows 95 or Windows 98?" is more typical. Such is the prevalence of these two operating systems that other OSs, even once-popular ones such as DOS, don't even register as existing as far as many firms are concerned. These two OSs represent only a fraction of the OS choices available, although they do represent a huge proportion of the OS market share.
