Appendix C. Finding a Mindfulness Teacher

As we discussed in chapter 8, if you choose to work with an advisor, finding the right one is a critical contributing factor to your potential financial success and peace of mind. Likewise, if you choose to work with a Mindfulness teacher, you will want to give serious consideration to the following questions:

  • Is the individual well trained? Who has he studied with? Who has trained and authorized/encouraged him to teach? This will give you a sense of the quality of his training and credibility.

  • Does she teach scientifically proven techniques? This will ensure that success can be replicated.

  • Does he continue to work with a teacher of his own? This will give you a sense of his ongoing commitment to his own development.

  • Does she have professional or life experience that is relevant to you? This will ensure that she can coach you in ways that will enable you to apply the teachings to both your life and your business/profession.

  • Who are his students? Do others speak highly of him and recommend him to their colleagues or friends? There's no greater endorsement than a referral.

  • Is there good chemistry between the two of you? Do you feel you can learn from this person? You are more likely to learn from someone you understand easily.

  • Is she available to you when you need support? Can she tailor the practice to your particular needs? One size does not fit all; within generic techniques there is much leeway and potential to adapt to individual needs.
