A WORKING DEFINITION OF COACHING

Much has been written by others about what coaching is and what it isn’t. For our purposes here, we’ll define it quite broadly as that part of a relationship in which one person is primarily dedicated to serving the long-term development of effectiveness and self-generation in the other.1 Let’s take a look at the elements of that definition.

Some relationships that involve coaching—for example, between a coach and a paying client—are exclusively built around the learning, growth, and change of the client. In exchange for the coach’s expertise, the client pays the coach money. In many other situations, however, coaching represents part of a more complex relationship.
