MAINTAINING SELF-AWARENESS

Self-awareness means the capacity to observe oneself in action. This aspect operationalizes the self-observation work discussed in Chapter Two. Recall that we can artificially separate our mind into two parts. The first, the active mind, is engaged in the action of the moment—typing, cooking, walking, reading, talking with a client. The second, the observer mind, stands aside: watching, noticing, ever alert. The observer mind is like a scientist: interested, dispassionate, objective. It notices what the rest of the mind is doing, and when we heed its observations, it brings us a new perspective on what we are feeling and doing.
