Getting Cheaper Calls
Call charges have dropped dramatically, both in the United States and the UK. However, cell phone calls can still be expensive.
In the UK, I use a service called 18866 (see http://www.18866.co.uk), which can be used from a landline or cell phone to make discounted calls. It offers great savings—especially internationally.
International Calling Cards
If you need to make international calls while traveling, try using http://www.pingo.com. All this prepaid service requires is some credit on your account. In most countries, you can access the service from any phone by dialing a local-rate number, and your call charges will be cut dramatically.
In many hotels, calls to local numbers are free. By using Pingo, you can make international calls without paying high hotel rates.
Skype
Skype is a great way to keep in touch when travelling, and it's free to contact another Skype user. They also offer discounted calls from Skype to landlines and cell phones.
