*The “wild guess” term may be a little unfair. The estimate is usually computed by determining cost of goods sold as a percentage of sales and working backward to determine inventory. This method defeats the purpose of determining an inventory figure—to compute cost of goods sold and gross profit. However, it is a little better than an outright wild guess.
