There are two fundamental types of consulting: advice-based and product-based. It’s important to understand the difference between the two, since crossed wires in this area are often a source of consulting confusion and client disappointment.

Advice-based consulting is a business relationship where value is exchanged by way of information, advice, and knowledge, all delivered from a strategic vantage point. The operational phrase for the consultant is I know. This is the traditional consultant-as-expert model, where the consultant comes in, studies the situation, creates a detailed report, and plops a big binder on your desk.
