What a Consultant Can Do That You Can’t

Often, a consultant’s value is pretty basic: As an outsider, he or she can see things, hear things, and say things that the manager simply cannot see, hear, or say. Here’s what I mean: As a manager, you’ve probably repeatedly pointed out to people in the organization that a certain process or system is flawed or broken, but no one seems to take it seriously. However, a consultant coming in from the outside can take one look, do a bit of research, and report his conclusion that the process or system is flawed or broken, and BINGO: The emperor suddenly realizes that he is, indeed, wearing no clothes. It’s an amazing effect, and one I’m sure you’ve seen in action many times.
