We certainly set off another person’s defenses if we treat them with a sense of superiority that stems from the basis of race, gender ethnicity, wealth, intellectual ability, physical characteristics, and so on. The resultant feelings of inadequacy on the part of the listeners or their frustration causes them to hear only what their emotions are screaming at them to hear, and the subsequent resentment and hostility can be devastating to a diverse work team’s performance.
