Recruitment and selection is often the first place organizations will start when building a diverse work environment. Oftentimes, however, many organizations demonstrate only a superficial commitment to diversity in spite of demographic and other evidence to the contrary. A common refrain heard by many goes something like this: “If only we could find some truly qualified women and minorities, we would be happy to hire them. Those folks don’t seem to be interested in the type of work we do in our industry. If you find some, we’ll hire them.”
