Evaluating the Responses

Response A:

“Don’t ever do that again. We’ll talk about this more during your 30-day review.”

This response is a dictatorial, attacking, “I’m the boss” style. In no way is it coaching because it is not deliberate, prepared, mutual, attentive to the other person, or positive.

Response B:

“When we’re both free this afternoon, let’s meet to debrief how the mistake happened and how we can help you to do better the next time.”

In addressing the performance problem, this manager is setting up a formal meeting at an appropriate time. The response also shows that the manager views the mistake as a learning opportunity.

Response C:

“You’ve got me so angry. Just don’t talk to me for the next week.”
