Although almost any situation may offer an opportunity to coach, it is important to recognize if the time is right.

Check your mindset

You need to make sure you are in the right frame of mind to coach. If you are impatient for action or unsure of what needs to happen, coaching attempts could create negative consequences.

Identify the employee’s readiness

Determine if the employee is receptive to coaching at that moment. If he or she is feeling particularly insecure, off balance, or too focused on a task to listen, coaching may be detrimental at that moment.

See if the situation is ripe
