The Setting

Coaching can occur in a formal or informal setting. The two can be connected. Topics discussed in a formal meeting can be referred to during informal meetings. For example, if in a formal setting you had previously discussed ways the employee could more actively explore a customer’s needs, listen in on a customer call made by the employee and discuss it together afterwards.

A formal setting

A formal setting is where there is a scheduled meeting in an office, conference room, or over the phone, with a structured format. For example, conducting a performance appraisal.

An informal setting

An informal setting can be anywhere: walking in the hallway, driving in the car, standing by the employee’s desk.
