Coaching E-mails

E-mails are very convenient, but they can also be a dangerous mode of business communication. Unless used with care and sensitivity, they can easily become a fertile ground for growing misperceptions and false assumptions. Most people do not put the same effort into an e-mail as they would a letter. The ease of response makes it very easy to respond prematurely or inappropriately. The communication of information without emotional content can often lead to negative conclusions.

Vault.com, a workplace research firm, conducted a survey of 1,000 workers. They found that 51 percent of respondents said that the tone of their e-mails is often misperceived. The misperceptions include viewing the e-mail as angry, too casual, or abrupt. ...
