Coaching Pitfalls

There are various pitfalls that keep managers from being effective coaches.

False Praise

When you give praise that you don’t really believe, your subordinate will know it.

Perfectionism

If you are too picky and directive about performance, the employee will stop trying.

Vague Feedback

Generalizations and unclear feedback will have limited impact.

Inconsistency

Sending mixed messages about goals and expectations can lead to confusion and/or resentment.

Constant Criticism

This is not coaching! It is punishment and punishment stops an employee from taking any creative, independent action.

Being Uninvolved

You can’t help someone develop without participation and interest in his or her work.
