Managers walk a fine line between truth-telling and feelingsprotection. Techniques that may have worked in the past are not always usable today. For example, you may have learned that the sandwich technique is a good way to deliver negative news. With it, you start by noting positive actions your subordinate may be engaging in. Then you would transition to the real point of the exchange—the delivery of carefully couched criticism. You would then finish the “sandwich” with another positive slice.
