WIN-3 TEST

We’ve become so accustomed to hearing about Win/Win outcomes that we feel satisfied when we’ve achieved them. The Win-3 Test is a simple one—it merely asks you to identify a third beneficiary of the Win/Win outcome toward which you are striving.

Let’s say you’ve been working with an employee who responds with sarcasm to any and all stimuli. You’ve been meeting to discuss the effect her words are having, not only on office morale but even on her career. Add one more element to the equation. Ask and answer the question that will allow you to pass the Win-3 Test:

•  Who or what else will benefit if this problem is successfully resolved?

Clearly, the employee herself will benefit, long-term, if she is able to mend her verbal ways. And ...
