COMMUNICATING YOUR IDEAS

Paragraphs are designed for readers, not writers. They encourage a reader’s understanding and come at a time in the writing process when you, as a writer, must shift from idea production—getting your ideas down on paper—to idea communication. You must now direct that communication to your readers.

Readers need your help. Remember, you know what you’re saying, but your readers do not. Help them by developing sound, well-written paragraphs. Use clearly designed topic sentences, and weave transitional elements into each paragraph so readers can easily follow the development of your ideas. If communication is the objective of writing, understanding is paramount, and paragraph development essential.
