Writing Workshop #4Surveying

Once you’ve gotten your thoughts about a topic on paper, you’re ready to survey. Look for holes in your information—places in your fastwriting that seem to lack depth or substance. Surveying will help prepare you for the hunting phase.

Objectives

1.    To clear away the clutter of the initial draft.

2.    To discover what the writer does and does not know about the topic.

Activities

STEP 1

Review your discovery draft on a grand scale. Label similar groups of ideas with the same letter or number to help you establish how much information you have in each main category.

STEP 2

Review your groupings and list the areas that need more research or development.
