WHEN AND WHERE?

Now, with the who (the audience) and the why (the purpose) firmly in mind, you need to think about the when and the where—the timing of the topic. Sometimes a topic will float, while other times it will sink. Political considerations always influence a piece of writing. What happened before your boss read the proposal? Did she see a big article in the morning newspaper that talked about how poorly widgets perform? If she did, you’re going to need a most persuasive document to overcome this poor timing. Depending on your topic’s importance, you may have to wait a few days, weeks, or even months before surfacing it. Not everything has to be written or submitted right now. Timing can be crucial to the success of any project.
