Mentors clearly want to support positive initiatives and to encourage rather than discourage mentees from pursuing their chosen paths, even if there is concern about the probability of successful results.

This is why—from the advocacy viewpoint which is the rationale behind the mentoring relationship—the act of “brutally” deflating the mentee’s ego over the issue of ability versus goals under the guise of “for the mentee’s own benefit” serves no legitimate or constructive purpose.
