Getting the climate right

Coaching is not only about asking questions and hearing what the other person is saying. Before you use each of the tools in this book, you need to create a climate of TRUST between you and your coachee:

Test the temperatureBe aware of the other person’s reactions and feelings
Respect the individualTreat the other person as an adult whose beliefs, values, opinions and ways of doing things may be different from your own
Understand their point of viewPut yourself in their shoes
Say it!You have to say what you’ve heard to check understanding
Tailor your approachMatch your language and style to the other person’s approach
