History of the tool

This tool has been developed by drawing on the author’s own experience as a coach and leader to smooth the bumps in the road to a successful performance review. The model sets out a series of steps used and tested over the years, such as setting the stage at the beginning of the process to give it structure and weight.

Asking for the coachee’s opinion of their own performance before you evaluate gives them the opportunity to assess themselves, provides some control plus a starting point to generate discussion and comparison. You can avoid using an overly directive approach, which often stifles debate.
