  • SWOT is a useful tool for analysing an organization, a team, a person’s capabilities or an idea prior to setting a direction for strategy, making a decision or creating a workable action plan.

  • Strengths and weaknessess are the current and internal factors involving past experience and the present position.

  • Opportunities and threats are factors involving the future and the external environment that may contribute positively or negatively to success.

  • Make sure you are very clear of the purpose of the exercise – keep checking the subject of your SWOT analysis.

  • Don’t be tempted to qualify or evaluate the factors as you identify them – save it until you have completed all four SWOT sections.
