Unpacking the example

James came to his manager coach with a problem he had been wrestling with for a while. The manager asks him to describe what is happening, giving him time to do it and listening carefully. It is not always easy to get the facts straight in one go, particularly if coachees have had it going round and round in their heads. You may need to question and prompt to get to the heart of things.

Bright Idea!

When faced with a problem we can get confused or overwhelmed. The problem can run around in our heads.

Write down the problem as clearly as you can on a piece of paper, and then forget about it until the next day.
