When faced with a problem, the road ahead can sometimes be difficult to see clearly. We may simply turn to someone more experienced and ask for help, which is exactly what happened to Napoleon Bonaparte, the reported founder of the method. (See the ‘History of the tool’ later in this chapter for more details.)
The DROPS structure allows us to explore and understand a problem in more detail. The best solution can become apparent at any stage. For example, having completed the first step of fully describing the problem, the ideal way forward may become obvious.
