In this example, the manager chose to give feedback as soon as Mike came off the phone. Her request to have a chat was informal but direct. She made sure that it took place in her office, where they would not be overheard or interrupted and where she could give him her full attention. Giving this kind of feedback in front of Mike’s colleagues would have been embarrassing for him and would have made it more of an issue than it needed to be. (The emotional and physical setting was appropriate for the task.)
