Sample coaching conversation

Our manager coach has just overheard a phone conversation that Mike was having with a customer. He’s at his desk in an open plan office. She taps him on the shoulder:

Manager:

Mike, do you have time for a chat in my office?

Mike:

Yeah, sure. (They go into the office, where they will not be disturbed or overheard by other team members: the physical setting. The emotional setting is informal and not heavy handed.)

Manager:

I’ve just heard your side of the conversation with one of our customers. (The topic)

Mike:

Oh. Right.

Manager:

How do you think it went? (Asks for Mike’s opinion)
