Unpacking the example

Jan has approached the manager coach with an idea that he says is wishy-washy. He knows what he’s after but needs to make it more concrete. He is having trouble expressing it. He and the coach spend some time pinning down the ideal result. First, the coach gets him to visualize it, asking what it would look like. This question doesn’t quite work, as Jan can’t ‘see’ it. It may be that he doesn’t imagine things visually – occasionally people find it easier to imagine in terms of what is happening, what it feels like or maybe even what it sounds like. It may also be that it’s too early in the process. He may need to think around the desired result before stating it specifically.
