How to use the tool

Your job as a coach is to structure the conversation using the five stages of the COACH model to ensure that learners (who we also will call ‘coachees’) think through the problem or issue for themselves, clarify their understanding and create their own solutions. Each stage of the COACH sequence is essential to the process.

As you read through the following example conversation, notice how the coach uses a series of questions to encourage the coachee to generate his or her own answers and so move from uncertainty to an effective solution.
