A few years ago I heard a brilliant variation of an old saying which has resonated with me ever since. It says simply:

‘Sticks and stones may break my bonesBut words can permanently damage me’.

I heard these words on MTV and I imagine the musician who said them was thinking about words spoken by others to you. And he was right.
