As a speaker or speech writer, you can, by using quotations, tap into an almost unlimited source of ideas. Quotations are effective as openings, endings, and everywhere between. No matter what subject you're speaking on, you'll find scores of appropriate quotations, if you just know where to look.
The first thought that comes to mind when quotations are mentioned is that old standby, Bartlett's. But Bartlett's Familiar Quotations is just one of many compilations of quotes—familiar and unfamiliar. For a serious writer, one book of quotations is not enough. I have several. My favorite is The Home Book of Quotations, compiled by Burton Stevenson. I also like The Oxford Dictionary of Modern Quotations, by Tony Augarde. A good source ...
