Enormity/enormousness

The most common misuse of these words is to use enormity to describe something of very large physical size. Enormity refers to something that is monstrous or appalling; enormousness refers to size, either figurative or physical. We may speak of the enormity of a crime but we must say enormousness when we're talking about the vastness of the desert.
