Acknowledgments

The Acknowledgements section is an essential part of any book, as no scientific idea, hypothesis, or generalization worth its salt is born in an isolated brain. Science lives only in networks of scientists, and an author can say something worth reading only when he or she extensively taps into these networks. On one hand, an Acknowledgements section should be easy to write because it is relatively standard and formal; on the other hand, it becomes a difficult task because so many colleagues and friends have been important to the author’s work and thinking in various ways, even if rather few have helped with the book directly. I try to be inclusive without going into too fine differentiation.
