Albert Einstein (1879–1955) was probably the best known scientist of the twentieth century. As a scientist he recognised that progress could be achieved only by challenging current orthodoxies which were upheld by those institutions and individuals that had a vested interest in maintaining the status quo. It is for this reason that he said:

Unthinking respect for authority is the greatest enemy of truth.
