CONCLUSION
There was strong competition for the accolade of Top Ten entry in this section between Warren Bennis and Henry Mintzberg. Both of them are seeking to undermine the myth that leaders are born not made and that they possess special gifts. It’s important to destroy this canard if we are to develop enough leaders to take us forward in both the private and public sectors. I finally chose Warren Bennis’s quotation as it is simple, clear and carries greater force:
The most dangerous leadership myth is that leaders are born … The myth asserts that people simply either have certain charismatic qualities or not. That’s nonsense … Leaders are made rather than born.
