ALFRED P. SLOAN ON THE VALUE OF MANAGEMENT BY EXCEPTION

Use this to get rid of all the reports that tell you everything is going to plan.

Alfred Pritchard Sloan (1875–1966) was an American business executive and the long-time President, Chairman and CEO of General Motors Corporation. He is credited with turning General Motors into a global player in the automotive industry.

As a busy executive, he demanded that all reports submitted to him should be short and useful. He didn’t want to drown in paper or statistics. He justified this approach saying that:

Of all business activities 99 per cent are routine … The entire 100 per cent can be handled by managing the 1 per cent of exceptions.
