INTRODUCTION

What role you play in the preparation of the organisation’s strategic plan will depend on your position in the organisation and the approach that your organisation takes to planning. At a minimum you will be expected to support and implement the organisation’s strategic plan. Even if you only play a very limited role in strategic planning, you will almost certainly find yourself working on and monitoring the operational plan for your unit, section or department. So it’s not possible to ignore the planning and budgetary control cycle of your organisation. Indeed, the higher you climb, the more time you will spend on planning the future of your organisation and monitoring budgets.
