KEY MESSAGES TO TAKE FROM THIS SECTION

  • Identify the aims of the project and summarise them in a single sentence.
  • Use the TRAP analysis to assess if you have any chance of success. If you have little or no chance of success, then renegotiate the terms of the project with sponsors.
  • Do all you can to have the final say in who will be included in the project team.
  • Learn to say no – especially to your bosses.
  • Plan the project on the basis of delivering a skeleton working project before adding the fiddly bits.
  • Keep reports and meetings to a minimum.
  • Take corrective action as soon as you spot the potential for a problem. Similarly, be prepared to run with unexpected positives that arrive, and try to build on them.
