HOW DO I SET TARGETS FOR MYSELF AND MY STAFF?

Why it’s important: Managers are judged on what they deliver, not on how popular they are.

You can be the most affable colleague in the world, but unless you can deliver results you’ll never make it. To deliver great results you need the active support of your staff. As part of your motivation strategy (see Question 21) you should set both team and individual targets for your staff.

Unfortunately, many managers spend insufficient time thinking about how they should frame their targets. The result is that they end up with a wish list that lacks clarity, is overly ambitious, often self-contradictory, unachievable and lacking in completion dates. You need to avoid such pitfalls.
