Stacking and flowing
Famously, the Eskimos have a zillion words for snow.
It makes sense. If something plays a big role in your life then it helps to understand its every aspect and nuance, every flake and crystal. So to speak.
In England we have more words for rain than, say, the desert people of the world.
Words like spitting, drizzle, April showers, pouring, cats and dogs, stair rods, bucketing down, misty rain, barely raining, call-this-rain?, steady rain, torrential and biblical all help us know how wet we're going to get on the way to work.
And they help us dress appropriately for picnics and Glastonbury.
