Chapter 76. Web Hosting Services

Most businesses will have their web sites hosted at a hosting company. These companies maintain the servers and Internet connection, and you simply upload files to put them online.

The two main server platforms for which 99 percent of available software is designed are Unix/Linux and Microsoft Windows. Most web hosting companies can set you up with either platform. In my experience there is more software written for Unix/Linux web servers, so all other things being equal, that's what I'd recommend.

Before you make any decisions regarding web hosting, you should know what software you'll be running—different server platforms are required depending on the software you'll be using. In some cases you can get a version of the software to run on Unix/Linux or a different version for Windows, but quite often the software is only available for one or the other.
