Web design software comes in two basic flavors: HTML editors and "What You See Is What You Get" (WYSIWYG) editors. With the WYSIWYG editors, it's almost like using your favorite word processor—you don't need to know any HTML code.

One drawback is that some of them add extraneous HTML code to your page, or make undesired changes to special characters or sometimes even to your live web site pages. Most of this can be controlled by setting the options correctly.

The de facto standard in web design software is Adobe Dreamweaver:

There are a lot of other good choices, though, including several high-quality free applications, a few of which follow.
