Chapter 38. Keywords

When I talk about keywords here, I'm talking about the words and phrases you focus on when promoting your site, as well as the words and phrases people use when searching for (and finding) your site. These two sets of keywords aren't always the same!

For search engine optimization, you want to make sure your site comes up on one of the first search engine pages (number one if possible, naturally) when users search for keywords most relevant to your site's theme.

For pay-per-click search engine advertising, you will want to generate a list of all the relevant keywords and keyword phrases. Some of these will be profitable and some won't, but you won't know which are which until you start advertising with them. As you determine the unprofitable keywords, you can remove them from your account and raise your bid prices for the profitable ones. See "Pay-Per-Click (PPC) Search Engines" for more information about this.

Keyword selection should also be an integral part of any of your "article marketing" efforts.

These tools help you select keywords to bid on, generate keyword lists, and analyze your site's keyword performance (and that of other sites as well).
