Principles of lesson identification

The first step in the lessons learned workflow that we described in Chapter 2 is to identify the lessons. This needs to be done well and regularly, to cover success as well as failure, and to involve everyone who has valuable knowledge and learning to share, even if they don’t realise it! You need to pay particular attention to the quality of the lessons, because the rest of the lessons learned cycle won’t deliver value if the identified lessons are too poorly described to learn from.
