11.1. The Engagement Index

The Engagement Index © is elegant in its simplicity. Developed by a crack Towers Perrin team led by Diane Gherson, Monica Oliver, and Doug Friedman, the index helps identify where people or groups of people lie on an engagement continuum. There are three points on the continuum: job holders, contributors, and employee owners.

Job holders meet minimal requirements and are needed to get behind-the-scenes work done.

Contributors tend to be responsive to needs. They're critical to customer satisfaction and other factors that are important to a company's success.

Employee owners think and act like owners of the business. They have high potential to influence the company's direction and outcome.
