12.1. The Correct Way to Benchmark

How, then, should you benchmark communication? Here are six steps. If you follow them closely, you'll be able to gather a lot of relevant information that will help improve your organization's performance.

  1. Know thyself! Honestly answer the following questions: What are our values, especially about people? What do we believe about information sharing? What do we tend to share readily? What do we tend to keep silent about? What does that say about us? Is there a business reason to share more than we do now? Are we willing to share more than we do now?

  2. Know the problem. Ask yourself the following questions: What do we need to do particularly well to win? How are we doing at those things? Where might poor communication ...
